Sat 11 Feb 2012Surrey Men's League XC - Fixture 4 - Lloyd Park |
Results Index Full Results (corrected) Promotion! A splendid finish to the season, winning the final fixture in style, consolidating our 2nd place and gaining promotion to Division 3 for next season. It was a great turn-out of runners and supporters at Lloyd Park. If there had been a competition for largest and most vociferous support I think we would have won that as well. A big thank you to all who ran and braved the cold to cheer on the team. Match Points: Collingwood 161, Woking 240.5, Holland 257 Final Points: Woking 757.5, Collingwood 980, Holland 1117 Dulwich Runners and Ful-On-Tri were relegated from Div 2, so the Div
3 teams for next season are: Many thanks to all who contributed through the season: Neil, Ercole, Robert, Martin, Steve, Bill, Dean, Richard, Andy A, Shaun, Nigel, David, Andy S, Doug, Rupert, Roger, Andy R, Andrew G, Jason, and Paul. Sharpen up your spikes and studs for a return to Div 3 for the first time since 2002/3. Fixture 1 - 20 October 2012. I have not received amended results to date (17/02/12) so have corrected obvious mistakes in the full results myself. |

Sat 11 Feb 2012Surrey Ladies XC League - Fix 4 - West End Common |
Results Index Div 1 Results Div 1 Table Div 2 Results Div 2 Table Official results revised 18/02/12. Collingwood's 2 teams were 12th and 29th out of 31 on the day, and 3 scoring teams finished 15th, 32nd, and 45th out of 48 at the end of the season. Well done to the ladies and thanks to all those who took part through
the season - Mary, Jenny, Ruth, Annette, Sandhya, Karen, Kate, Elaine,
Cat, Gill, Lorraine, Rachel, and Alison. I believe this is the first time
we've had 3 scoring teams (albeit 2 scoring in only some fixtures), and
15th place is the highest finish since the 2006/7 season, when there were
fewer clubs competing. |

Sat 4/Sun 5 Feb 2012Pilgrims Challenge - Overall |
Annette reports: "When it said on the forecast last week that it was going to snow I didn't really pay much attention! Mistake 1! I did expect it to be cold so had layers and was wrapped up well. I blagged a lift to the start which was really useful although it did mean I was going out with the 10am start; I've run the course before and don't mind being on my own so wasn't really too worried about that bit. But it was still colder than I expected so I added a layer fully expecting to take it off (along with my gloves and BVH woolly hat) well that wasn't to be, I was glued to them for the rest of the weekend it felt like! The route was mainly ok although I did manage to get someone lost! But in my defence it really wasn't on purpose! I don't mind being on my own but I found myself behind a random walker and he kept looking behind to see where I was and it was kind of freaking me out a bit and not concentrating! So when one of the guys from CP 3 caught up with me and said he was going to the finish I was glad to see him. We got to a junction without a sign and the instructions said take the steep path up the hill. It didn't look as familiar as I would have liked BUT the instructions were clear so off up the hill we went it was steep so I was quite slow and he headed off much more quickly, BAD news for him! Because it was the wrong turn! Someone had helpfully removed the sign pointing the other way! But I checked my phone GPS and decided to head back down the hill and found a helpful dog walker! (I wasn't the only one to go wrong here but it certainly added time to my day) BUT I NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN! Ooops! The rest of the day was fairly uneventful and I made it back in just over 7 hours! Not fast for some but a PB for me! I got back and got myself booked into see my favourite physio! Then sorted out my bed and grabbed a shower! They have some rather funky mixed showers there but the water was hot and there was enough of it to get us warm and clean again. Dinner was good and there was plenty of it! We had sort of arranged to meet a mate at the pub but by then it was dark and even colder and starting to SNOW! As much as I would have loved to have shared a jar with Cat and Josh it was not to be and I stayed to listen to an amazing story of one man's journey across the States! Funny what stays with you isn't it! Someone asked what James was thinking about during the long days and he told us that he thinks about what he will blog and planning his own funeral! I came back to this several times the next days during the LONG hours it took to get back to Farnham! Next day was a thick blanket of snow and since I had planned to start slowly that's exactly what I did! Last year I struggled till the check point at Ranmore and so had decided to walk up and run down till I got to that point and all went pretty well till I got to Box Hill at which point all went to hell! For those who don't know me I have Osteoporosis! This makes me a bit anxious about falling! Unsurprisingly! And the more anxious you are of course the more likely you are to fall! It took me almost 30 minutes to get down those steps by which time I was cold and really p****d off! The next bit was the long walk up Denbies to the check point and so I walked briskly to warm up and was happy to be able to get moving a bit after that point! The rest of the day was pretty uneventful although long and I decided by the last check point to ring my lift home and tell them to leave without me! I called my OH (not realising that the football was on!) and asked him to come and get me instead! Finally I finished at just over 9 hours! A 33 mile PW! BUT I still had a great time I still really enjoyed myself and I'll still be back next year! Hopefully without the snow!"

Sat 4 Feb 2012Thames Trot 50 |
Mel reports: "I ran the Thames Trot 50 miles on Sat. The course
started 3 miles outside Oxford and we followed the Thames path back to
Henley. It was a very early start as we drove to Henley, left the car
there then drove to the start. It was very cold waiting to satart the
race (-8). I eventually warmed up after about 5 miles. The course was
very pretty and flat apart from a few hills where the path left the riverside.
I was aiming to finish in around 10 hours, due to my recent form and stomach
pains, however it turned out to be a good day, no pains and a finish time
of 9 hours 9 mins. Good day at the office. |

Sun 29 Jan 2012The Perch |
Official times 29/01/12. 4 course bests today, probably helped by the course being somewhat less muddy than last year, the first running of the race on this course. Neil reports: "Sunday 29th January was the Perch XIII 6.25 mile run, hosted by Epsom Oddballs. Collingwood, as is the new usual, were out in force, with 17 finishers and a few more helping. Rachel, one of our new members, who has already very much been pulling her weight at the XC had to pull out after half way. And her husband Richard didn't look too good at the end either - that's one running bug I don't want to catch! John Allen, there in a supporting role, seemed to find a quick way of getting around the course, and as fast as I could run round, he was there waiting to cheer me on. Thank you John. I'm sure you cheered everybody else on as well and am sure they all thanked you too. To the race and a big shall-I-shan't-I wear my off road shoes. Having warmed up on a muddy part of the course with racing flats on, I opted to change 5 minutes before the start and wished I hadn't. Everybody that hadn't worn trail shoes wished they had. From the start, three headed away from me and I was determined not to repeat my disaster of last week (sorry, too little time) by following them too closely and burning out later on, so I did my own thing. One other whippet overtook me after about half a mile leaving me in 5th place. By 1.5 miles, whippet man had crashed and I reeled him in, followed by Mr 3 before the 3rd mile. So now I was in 3rd and leaving them behind. I spent the rest of the race in no-man's land watching from the clearings the one and only Danny Norman (AKA Josh's new BFF) jostling for 1st with the eventual winner. After the race, he said he wished he'd chosen trail shoes. So I bagged 3rd place (in my Collingwood vest, hoorah) and 1st V40. Prizes were shared (I'm all for sharing) so I got 1st V40. But a bit strange that someone I overtook, who came 4th has a medal with 3rd place on it! I absolutely loved the event. I knew so many people there that it felt like Roundshaw parkrun. The Flynns were there, as were the Chiltern Church lot. And the Mansion House cafe does a fantastic Victoria Sponge. They must have made a killing today. Very well organised and marshalled, but I did miss the finish funnel, as I'm sure Josh will delight in telling you. Oh, and one more thing - my medal says 10k - thanks Rupert for pointing that out! Covering both ends of the field, Kate ran a determined race, this after parkrun and XC yesterday and she promises to be on the track tomorrow." |

Sat 28 Jan 2012Battle Of Northampton Challenge |
Mel reports: "I was very nervous and anxious as I gathered with
the others at the start of the first ever Battle of Northampton Challenge.
I had decided if the pains in my stomach started then I would dnf and
cancel all marathons/ultra until I got myself sorted. Of course I wanted
to believe the pain would not reoccur, as I didn't want to cancel my planned
races. I took the whole run very easy and convinced myself if I did this
I would not have the pains. It seemed to work. No stomach pains, great!!
I was still getting some slight pain at the tops of both legs, but it
was bearable and not serious enough to cancel future runs at the moment. The facilities were good, race HQ being a gym, there were warm showers
and nice quiet changing rooms to use. After the event there was a raffle
and post-race massage. All the monies raised were donated to the local
hospice. I finished in 4 hours 23 mins, purposely not fast, but still
enough to bag me 4th lady! Robbie I think was around 6 hours." |

Official results (part) 29/01/12. The first time we've run this course in Stanmer Park, Brighton. A nice course but tough. Some great long descents, but of course what goes down must go up. There were 2 particularly taxing uphills. For one of these it was debatable whether running or walking was the faster way up. 745 finishers for the men's race and 335 for the women. |

Sun 15 Jan 2012Winter Tanners 30 |
Andy reports: "I chose to run the 30 miles of the Winter Tanners today having run only one ten miler since June. Some said I was silly, some said I was stupid and Gill said I was .......... Well you can guess what she thought! Not actually printable! Anyway, the new route this year, was for me, the best route I have run in either the Winter or old Summer Tanners; it was an excellent course, run with good conditions under foot. It was freezing at the start, but five degrees by the finish, on a route that went out under the North Downs and came back on top of it, starting and finishing from a car park in Leatherhead. There were some familiar parts of the route and some new sections which went past some lovely houses with great views. The ‘route narrative’ was excellent, so no detours off route this time. I decided to do a jog/walk strategy from the start, walking up anything that looked like a hill. Even though I started at 8am, I took a torch with me as I was worried about locking up completely and finishing after dark! However, taking it sensibly, I was able to run well, much better than I could ever hope for. I never tired, but was stiffening from 21 miles onwards. I was aiming for sub-7 hours, but was heading towards sub-6, so pushed on over the last few miles and finished in 5:56! I was delighted with that time and ever more delighted to be back on the marathon trail again. Even more delighted than that, I can still walk this evening, if not too comfortably; tomorrow might be different though! Richard and Bill started much later than me, yet they still managed to cruise past me in the last couple of miles, obviously having a good run." Allan reports: ""It was the Tanners today. First run back since
injury & furthest I'd run since then was 5 miles. So it was tough,
but a run-walk got me round in just under 8hrs. Shocking time but it's
done & dusted."

I ran the Holly Run XC and clocked 40.51 for 45th place in the combined
mens senior/vets event. Very enjoyable event but a tough course - 3 long
laps of Priory Park - not sure what the distance is."

Sat 17 Dec 2011Christmas Pudding Dash - 5 miles |
Karen reports: "This is a two lap race around the wonderfully scenic
Ashburnam Place near Battle. The rather fierce uphill section was followed
by a very muddy downhill. The hill seemed so much steeper the second time
around! Lots of runners turned out on what was a perfect, if somewhat
chilly day for the chance to run around the wonderfully scenic gardens
of this stately home that is normally closed to the general public. The
race was well organised by Nice Work and each runner was presented with
a medal and a Christmas pudding at the end."

Doug's 50th marathon. Doug reports: "On Sunday I ran the Saxon Shore Marathon on the coast
from Deal to Sandwich with the Royal St. George Golf course on one side
and the sea on the other. The predicted rain did not materialise however
the stiff headwind gave plenty of opportunity for running on the spot.
The race was part of a w/e double but I only ran on the Sunday finishing
my 50th marathon in 5:56:30 and receiving an excellent goodie bag which
included a can of strongbow and a giant toblerone!" |

Alison reports: "Cat and I ran a the (apparently, according the the organisers) wettest and rather muddy Grim 8 - which was in reality an 8.5 mile off-road trail race, through mud, lakes, log paths, mogul fields and up steep inclines at a tank-driving training course at Aldershot! Cat finished in 1302nd place in a 1 hour 31 minutes and I managed 1 hour
31 minutes and 17 seconds coming in in 1304th place. It really was great
fun! 1945 ran." |

Great runs from Andy and Dean on a fairly muddy Farthing Downs. Most of us left well splattered, especially Dean and Ercole who both made close up inspections of the terrain. Strangely however, Annette and Nigel finished with barely a mud spot between them. Unfortunately no repeat of our visiting team win at The Gibb. |

Sun 13 Nov 2011A20 Path 'n' Downs |
Mel reports: "On Sunday Steve and I ran the A20 paths and downs.
This was a new marathon which had previously been a 21 mile run. The webpage
was very vague with its course description so didn't know what to expect.
The name to me seemed to suggest there would be a lot of off-road and
it started in Hollingbourne near Maidstone so I presumed it would be fairly
flat. The drink stations were plentiful and stocked jaffa cakes and jelly babies.
The course was slightly long at 26.7 miles. I managed to finish in 4 hours
13.37. I didn't see Steve at the end as I had to get back and go to work.
Steve finished in 4 hours 29 mins." |

Sun 13 Nov 2011Dalby Dash |
Nigel reports: "I ran the Dalby Dash on Sunday, a hilly 10k trail run in Dalby Forest in the North Yorkshire moors. The first 3k are uphill and hard - there's a king of the mountains prize for the first men and women to the top - but after that it gently runs mostly downhill until another kick up at about 2k to go. The hill sorted the field out quite quickly and I was in a group of 3 for most of the race. I was expecting around 43 mins but was pleasantly suprised with 42.08 and 46th overall so a bit of a return to form." |

Fri 11 - Sun 13 Nov 2011Druids Challenge |
Dave reports: "This weekend was the 3rd running of the Druids 3-day event, which covered a section of the old Roman Ridgeway stretching from Berkshire to Avon. Annette did fantastically and completed all 3 days and I managed to join up for the Saturday and Sunday events. The paths were a mix of hard chalky paths and mud tracks which seems to twist and turn forever. We followed the Ridgeway signs which made it virtually impossible to get lost. This was handy as my directions had turned into papier mache after an hour. It was very well organised. Neil and his team have a really slick operation and I can't think of many ways they could improve it. There was lots of food at the venues and plenty of snacks during the race. We mixed with familiar faces we remembered from previous events and on the whole everyone was very friendly. Sleeping in the big hall was as interesting as ever. Bodies sprawled all over the place like a hurricane refuge center. There was a talk given by motivational coach and experienced runner Rory Coleman on the Saturday evening but I found him a bit too preachy about how to lead a perfect lifestyle, so I popped into the village for a couple of pints instead. Legs feel a bit stiff now but no worse than an ordinary 26 miler. In
fact I was quicker on the final day which was a I know Annette really enjoyed it and is keen for the Pilgrims in February
and schedule permitting I'd jump at the |

Thur 27 Oct 2011Staffordshire Marathon |
Dave reports: "I had organised a half term trip to Paris for the Le Mans marathon last Sunday but my wife was too sick to travel so I needed something to cheer me up. Luckily Dave Bayley who runs Enigma running kindly let me sign up for this. He's a big Collingwood fan. This was the first running of the race which was an out and back race 3.6 miles or so along a canal towpath. There were only 25 runners but that made for good banter as we continually passed each other. First time I ran with an ipod for a while and it really helped as the
rain lashed down. Great medal, loads of water Brentwood Sunday now . Come on !!!!" |

Sat 22 Oct 2011Beachy Head Marathon |
Mel reports: "I ran the Beachy Head Marathon. This was my fourth time of running it. It doesn't get any easier. The course is a tough hilly one which runs over the Seven Sisters. The scenery is stunning. There was quite a strong wind throughout at times making it difficult to run into. There was one man who kept passing me, then I would pass him, he said to me oh I am tired I still have Berlin in my legs. I asked when was that he said a month ago, so I shouldn't be running today, I have not recovered and it is really affecting me. I kept quiet, didnt want to embarrass the poor man. I did end up finishing before him. However I had a good running managing to knock 13 minutes off my course
best and finishing in 4 hours 29mins 55. Very happy with that. I met Richard
and Bill afterwards, Bill did about 4 hours 6 mins and Richard 4 hours
18." |

Sun 9 Oct 2011Surrey Badger Half |
On Sunday 9 October 7 Collingwood members ran the Surrey Badger Half Marathon, a hilly off-road race starting from Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking running around Norbury Park near Leatherhead. Annette reports: "Sunday morning saw a number of Collingwood runners congregating on the Denbies Vineyard near Dorking. A new start saw great changing and toilet areas with an inside bag drop area and a very short walk to the start. Various club members had a variety of plans and we divided up quite early on, Ruth headed out promptly in line with her Dublin plan, Annette and Paul kept each other company and Lorraine was accompanied by her minders, Ali and Cat. The weather was really kind to us all and after the rain over night we had a cool start although the sun came out later on. The Badger is always a hilly route and the new version was no different! Having run out along the road we headed out into the hills and enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine! We had a couple of surprises at the end of the race running into some old friends (Wendy popped up at the finish) and new ones! Thanks very much to Josh and Neil for making a welcome committee at the end! And to Josh for bringing supplies with him! Also at the finish line was Karen in a different sort of uniform from the rest of us! Once over the line we collected our tee-shirts, chocolate bar and BEER!
A great technical tee shirt and the beer wasn’t bad either! Ali
probably has the prize for the most attendances but I think the rest of
us will be back to!"

Sun 2 October 2011Titsey Trail 10k |
Alison reports: "Today, Bill, Karen and I ran the Titsey Trail 10k.
This rather hilly off-road trail 10k around Oxted and Limpsfield was really
friendly, well-marshalled and good fun. It was also a bit on the warm
side! We were all set off in predicted times so slower runners didn't
start at the front and cause bottlenecks. This worked well. There was
a baggage drop, plenty of loos and tea and cakes afterwards and loads
of spot prizes (good technical tshirts)." |

Sat 1 Oct 2011Black Mountains 30 |
Mel reports: "On Sat I ran the Welsh Ultra Series Event 1. This event is organised by Might Contain Nuts. The series is four events however you can enter as many as you like. They are approx mileage, self sufficent off road hilly courses. The event started at Cymdhu camp site and caravan park, was an early start 7.30am. I was so tired as didn't get much sleep in my very hard bunk bed, that I managed to get into about 11.30pm, after a long drive and late dinner. At the registration I signed in and was told to check that I had all the compulsory kit (long trousers, hat, gloves, foil blanket, whistle, long sleeve top, waterproofs, food and water) I had 2 of those, I signed to say I had it all, I didn't think not having the other bits would be a problem today, the sun was out already. As soon as the race started we were heading uphill, we continued to climb for the first 5/6 ish miles, then it was downhill for a bit, then uphill again, through very rough bracken and narrow paths, I heard a man behind me saying just wait until we get to the big one, I looked up at this one and thought 'this is not the big one'. We continued up and up and up. After about 13 miles, where it was flat for a bit we ran past a gorgeous Welsh castle/cathedral couldn't read what it was called. I was busy admiring it,after running past it I looked ahead at the course again, that is when I saw it THE BIG ONE! this hill was huge, it was a mountain, probably the biggest in Wales! I continued up it very slowly, my legs were screaming and I was only 1/4 of the way up. This hill took forever to climb, on reaching the top, we ran along the ridge for several miles, before eventually coming back down, on very tricky, rocky paths. I managed to fall over, landed on my backside so all ok. My garmin ran out of battery, I reckoned I had run about 27 miles, On reaching the last checkpoint, the guy there said only 4 miles to go, I said oh I thought we had about 3, he replied well the course is actually 31.5 miles. Off I went up yet another hill. I managed to pass lots of people going up this hill, people were flagging during the heat, boy it was hot. I managed from time to time pour cold water from the streams over my head to keep cool. That last four miles seemed to go on forever. We ran through woodland areas, across streams and along muddy paths. The last couple were on the road, again I managed to pass about 5 people
here, who said they had 32 miles on their garmin. Where was the finish?
Eventually I came round the corner and I could see the camp site, I finished
in 7 hours 35 ish (will have to check official times when they come out
as no garmin). The finish was lovely everyone was sitting around the picnic
tables, listening to the music from the cafe and enjoying cold beers.
I was told the total mileage was 33 and there was 1850 feet of ascent.
A very very tough course in really hot conditions. I have entered the
2nd in the series which is 40 miles." |

Sun 25 Sep 2011East Grinstead 10k |
Annette reports: "On Sunday all four Helliwells had a brief trot
before retiring to the grandparents for lunch. The results were pretty
much as predicted although Alex managed a massive season's best! Annette
was pleased just to have got around in one piece having had a longish
run the day before. The weather was really good and the organisation really
quite good considering this was the second time this event had been organised.
Annette had been promised a flat run as it was predominately along the
disused railway line (The Worth Way) but unfortunately this was not the
case! But this was more than made up for by the fabulous welcoming committee
from the rest of the family." |

Sun 18 Sep 2011Farnham Pilgrim Marathon |
Mel reports: "Today I ran the Farnham Pilgrim marathon. This started
strangely enough in Farnham and followed the North Downs Way in parts
and the Pilgrims Way in other parts. It was very very pretty, however
quite tough. The trails were sandy in a lot of parts, uphill and sandy
makes it fairly hard to run on. The rain held off until 25 miles, when
it bucketed down, I was soaked, unfortunately it didn't make me run any
faster. The course was almost 27 miles, I finished in 4 hours 40, 12 mins
quicker than last year so I am pleased with that. |

Dave reports: "An LDWA event and very tough. Had to heavily rely
on the directions which became a real pain and gave me a headache after
a while. Amazing scenery but brutal hills which is reflected in my slow
time. I ran with some fun people and would do it again . 6.18h" |

Index After the race I made my way home, showered and checked where Dave was. He was further than I expected. I had said that I would meet him at Reigate Hill which was about 64 miles. I quickly made up some flasks of coffee etc and headed over there. Whilst driving there Dave rang to say he would be there in 10 mins, so it was lucky I was on my way. I continued to follow him from checkpoint to checkpoint, The next one was Box Hill. I made it there in plenty time so began to climb the steps to meet him, I got all the way to the top, no sign of him. The 1st, 2nd runners had passed me and at the last checkpoint he was in 3rd so I expected him anytime. Then came through the guy who was 4th, he had passed Dave. I was looking out for him, when I saw a head torch on another path, I knew that was propably Dave, so went along there and it was. I got him back on course and ran back down the steps, over the stepping stones to the checkpoint. Off I went to the next one which was 11 miles away. I waited there from about 10pm until 1am. I was getting very worried and suspected he had got lost again. He called he was ok, just going slow as it was a really hilly part of the course and he was tiring a lot. When he came in to that checkpoint it was 87 miles, he wanted me to run with him, but I couldn't I had the car and there was no way of getting back for it. I decided instead of meeting him at the last checkpoint, that I would drive to the finish and run from there to meet him. So I started to run at 2am to meet him, I followed my way back up the course I had run this morning, expecting to get about 3 miles or so, the miles went by and still no sign. I reached around 5.5 miles when I saw a faint head torch, it was Dave, his head torch batteries were fading and he could not see very well, we swapped head torches and off we went towards the finish. Now I didn't expect to be running so far, so I was in cargo trousers and a fleece, luckily I did have trainers and sports bra on. He was very tired, but I kept him going and I managed to help him to finish in 22 hours and 39 mins. I ran a total of 42 ish miles but it was worth it. This was the first running of both these events and there was a 50 mile
too. The organisation was great and would do it again, that is the marathon
not the extra miles." |

to Clayton in Sussex to run the Downland Challenge 30 miler. This is a
reasonable hilly 30 starting with a lap round the playing fields in Clayton
then heading up the hill passing the windmills onto the South Downs Way.
The course was an out and back course, I managed to catch up to Allan
a few miles before halfway. He proved to be a bit quick for me on the
hills and managed to lose me again just after halfway. On my way back
I passed Dave Freeborn who seemed to be doing fine, he was still smiling!!
Then I passed Rob and Tom, Rob said how long to half-way? I replied about
2 miles, he mumbled something like no it can't be. I felt as though I
was running quite well and was really enjoying the scenery and nice weather.
I managed to finish in 52nd place in 5 hours 34:49 only 3 mins behind
Allan who was 51st in 5 hours 31:39. Dave was next home in 94th position
and time of 6 hours 44:07. Rob must have run away from Tom as he finished
in 99th, 7 hours 46:17 and Tom in 100th, 7 hours 54:26. |

Sun 10 Jul 2011Chichester Challenge Marathon |
Mel reports: "On the 10th July I ran the Chichester challenge marathon.
This course was marked but badly and within the first 1/4 mile everyone
was running in the wrong direction, all the runners had to about turn
to get back on the correct course, I then ended up behind the walkers
on a very narrow path and they were not willing to let me past. I was
not bothered as I knew I wouldn't be running fast today, my legs were
still very tired from the 100 miles 2 weeks previous. The course markings
continued to be a bit dubious, but I ran with a chap who I have run with
before from Cornwall Harriers and he knew the route from last year, so
I stuck with him. We finished together in 5 hours 11 mins. I struggled
round, everything hurt, I obvisously hadn't recovered as well as I thought." |

Sun 3 Jul 2011Bewl 15 |
Alison reports: "On Sunday 3 July, Collingwood's Richard Fox and Bill Walsh ran the Bewl 15, a challenging 15 mile trail race around Bewl Water in East Sussex. Richard came in 100th in a time of 1:54:57 and took the last gold medal (first 100 receive a gold medal for their efforts). Bill clocked 1.55.30 coming in 105th place and won a silver for his efforts on his 49th birthday!" Bill reports: "Richard and myself ran the Bewl 15 mile trail race
today organised by Wadhurst Runners. Richard got a Gold medal as he was
100th, and the first hundred got gold, well deserved from near 700 starters.
I got a silver medal as I came in 105th, jealous me! |

Sat 2 Jul 2011Summer Enigma Ultra |
Allan reports: "A Double Day Moving onto the Ultra, I had decided on a run/walk strategy to get me
round. Using a system of 25 mins run & 5 min walk I finished the Ultra
in 5hrs 13mins going through the Marathon distance in a time of 4hrs 35mins.
Hopefully using this system I should be able to see myself through the
first major cut-off of 9.5hrs for 52 miles & still have enough energy
to get round the remaining 101 miles & still make all of those cut-offs
as well. |

Sat 25 - Sun 26 Jun 2011Western States 100 |
Very well done to Mel on completing this 100 mile trail race in California. Excellent achievement. Mel reports: "On the 25th June at 5am I started running the Western States 100 mile run. As I lined up behind the start line at Squaw valley (home to the 1960 winter Olympics) with another 400ish runners, I suddenly felt very very nervous looking straight up the snow covered hill I was about to climb, why am I doing this, I can’t run 100 miles was going through my head. Too late the siren had gone and off I went. It was a slow start as the first four miles rises 2550 feet, cresting at Emigrant Pass at 8750 feet. Once reaching the top of Emigrant pass I ran through the Granite chief wilderness area, this section 4 ish miles to 13 was completely covered in snow and ice. The snow was particularly difficult to run on due to the camber, being very slippery and very hard and rutted. I arrived at the checkpoint which was 13 miles, it had taken me 4 hours and 5 mins to get there, How on earth am I going to make this, The severity of what I was attempting was hitting me and I was very concerned. I remembered what they had said in the newbie speech the day before “don’t worry about losing time in the snow, you will be able to make it up on the downhill sections” Ok so I plodding on. The next checkpoint was at 19.6 miles, I was looking forward to getting there as I had some nice dry socks and a cooler top to change into. Once leaving Poppy Trailhead the third checkpoint the course went through an area which obviously suffered a forest fire at some point, the trees were charred and very eerie looking, The trial wasn’t too bad here, little bit undulating that’s all. I continued to run through this scarred forest to reach the top of the hill Duncan Canyon at 23.8 miles, 6 hours and 28 mins had passed, meaning that I was 25 mins behind the 30 hour cut off time, I have to make up some more time I thought, but not knowing how it would be possible. It was getting really hot and I was tiring already. I ran on and on through forest trials and dirt paths, up and down the hills and to my delight at the next checkpoint I was within the 30 hour cut off, maybe I will make it after all. Then came the canyons, I had heard about these from several past runners of the western states and in Dean Karnazas book, surely they can’t be that bad! The first one drops 2000 feet, crosses a small river then ascends an extremely steep 1500 feet, the second straight after descends 2600 feet, crosses a small river then ascends 1800 to reach Michigan Bluff at 55.7 miles. This was one of the checkpoints were they weighed you to check all was ok. I jumped on the scales, sorry girl they said you have lost too much weight you are going to have to stay here a while and gain it before we let you carry on. I couldn’t believe it, I felt fine and was running well at that point, they made me eat Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drink coke until my weight was back to normal. When I sat down here I was in tears, if they keep me here I will miss the time I have just made up and now be well behind the 30 hour cut off. The marshal said to me, you will be fine dear, stay here a while, then when we are ready we will let you carry on, But I have missed the cut off now I said, I will never make that time up, He said you can never say that In the Western States, I took this opportunity to pick up my head torch, change socks again and tie a long sleeve top around my waist ready for the night section. After 20 or so mins I managed to put on the weight so they let me continue. Off I went again, I thought I would not be able to make up the time; I was now only 20 mins inside the ultimate cut-off, when they pull you off the course. The next 7 miles were hard as it was getting dark; running along these trials in the dark takes all your concentration. As I ran down yet another canyon, thankfully not quite as steep as the other 2, I was convinced I saw an elephant, It can’t be I am in California, as I got closer it turned out to be a tree, then I saw a rattlesnake that was moving towards me, I stopped, looked behind me, no one was there, what I am going to do, I couldn’t side step it as I would fall down the canyon, I walked very slowly closer and closer to it, then realised it was only where a previous male runner had gone foe a wee. On reaching Foresthill at 62 miles, I was so glad as here I picked up My pacer Laura Kantor a ultra-runner from Bend, Oregon, I hugged her like she was my long lost best friend, I was so happy not to be on my own for the rest of the night. We chatted away and the miles were passing quickly, the trial was undulating along this section, there were also a few steep hills. As I got tired I would stop at the bottom of the hill, put my hands on my knees, I just needed to do this, why I don’t know, then I would stand up straight, look at the hill and walk/run up it, Laura kept saying, keep moving, keep moving, you will get that buckle. Somehow I didn’t believe her as I was still out-with the 30 hour cut off. We arrived at the famous Rucky Chucky river crossing it was 4.13am, 13 mins behind the 30 hour cut-off, Before we got in the boat to cross, A marshal called me to jump on the scales, oh no!!! But my weight was spot on; Laura had brought M & Ms that I had been eating all night, along with more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The boat crossing was a highlight, it was great fun, and we joked with the guys rowing the boats and rested for the short while it took to cross. Normally you have to wade through here, but this year due to a very high snowfall, the river was too high and fast flowing to do it. We disembarked the boat, at the other side, that was 78 miles done. The next aid station was only just over a mile away, that’s close I thought, yes I know now why, it was all the way uphill. But to my surprise I checked in there only 7 mins outside the 30 hour cut-off. Laura was still very encouraging, see your making up time, you can do it. I was getting really tired now after all I had been running for 24 hours now. I could see the start of the sunset, it was getting light again. That was very uplifting; I could make up some time now, as I could see where I was running. At the next checkpoint, I left my head-torch, changing into a fresh t-shirt and refuelled with, yes you guessed it peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, they did have chicken soup, burritos, grilled cheese sandwiches, choc brownies, sweets, nuts etc etc etc, but all I seemed to fancy was the peanut butter and jelly, they seemed to be working to. I left this checkpoint feeling pretty positive, it was a lovely morning, lovely scenery and I only had about 15 miles to run. Something inside my head, said you can do this, you are going to make the cut-off and pick up that buckle. Laura also kept saying, which was starting to drive me mad, your awesome girl, good job, and other Typical American sayings. From there on from checkpoint to checkpoint I was making up time. After passing through highway 49 checkpoint I was 5 mins inside the 30 hours, still wasn’t a foregone conclusion, I still had to work hard to gain more time. I really don’t know where the strength came from, but I was able to run and run and run, I thought It has gone a bit quiet, I looked behind and my pacer had gone, I had lost her, I carried on as I couldn’t afford the time to wait on her. I was running around one corner when I familiar figure, Bogdan who I had met on the mountain a few days before checking out the course, on that day he had given me so much advice on running the Western States, he had started it 10 times and finished 6. He shouted hello Melanie, Hello! I replied, he said you need to keep running, where is your pacer? She is behind I said, He said ok I will be back in a minute. He ran back to my pacer and I think told her to hurry up. He returned and said at the next checkpoint I am going to take your hydro-pak, give you my water bottle and you are going to run the last 3 miles, there are a few steep hills he said, but if you run, then you will make it. I took his advice. I left that last checkpoint, 3 miles to go, I can run 3 miles easy I thought. I took off like a hare chasing a rabbit in determination to get my buckle I am so close now; I am not going to miss it. At this point I ran across no hands bridge- the longest concrete bridge in the world at the time of its construction. On reaching a hill, I looked up, oh its steep I thought, but I knew I couldn’t walk, I ran up it slowly, when reaching the top, I wondered where my pacer had gone, she hadn’t caught up. But Bogdan was there. As the trial finished and I reached the pavement in Auburn, there was another hill, I saw Dave standing at the top, He was encouraging me and saying you only have a mile, I looked at the time it was 10.25ish, The cut off was 11am, it was then I knew I had done it, As I ran alongside Dave, I felt myself drifting away from him to, I could smell the finish line and there was no stopping me, As I entered the stadium for the final part around the track, I felt so elated, the crowd were cheering, the announcement came over the tandoid, “ this is Melanie Ross from Aberdeen, Scotland just as I crossed the line. Wow what a feeling I had been running for 29 hours 37 mins and I felt alive, elated, indescribable actually. I received my medal, jumped on the scales for the final time and got my blood pressure taken, it a bit high the medic said, Yes well I have just ran 100 miles. The whole experience was amazing, I went through every emotion along
the way, It was a great event, I got a finishers medal, The famous buckle,
t-shirts, fleece, rucksack, pin badge, arm sleeves, calf guards. Well
worth the £245 entry. Will I do it again, mmm I am still thinking
about it. I did say at the end I wouldn’t but maybe someday."

Mon 2 May 2011Esher Church School 10k |
Andy reports: "I ran the Esher Church School 10km, an event recommended to me last year by John Allen, which does not attract that many club runners. It is a friendly fund-raiser that was run mostly on tracks and paths, with about 3km on roads. Good conditions underfoot, if a little dusty, with a gently undulating route. I struggled with my injury to finish 36th of 203 runners in an official time of 43:44, having never really got going and being unable to push on."

Mon 2 May 2011Hart Sprint Triathlon |
Alison reports: "I completed the Hart Sprint Tri on Bank Holiday
Monday 2 May at Hartsmere Leisure Centre near Fleet, Hampshire. I'd been
persuaded to join a couple of my neighbours and have a go at a triathlon! Set off from home with Rich, Dom and Leka at 7.15 and drove down to the venue. Got there and then registered - I was starting at 9am. Collected my numbers but only needed one as I was using a tri belt. Had my number written on my left arm and left leg in permanent marker (I was 422)! Went back out to put number on tri belt, get bike and associated transition box into transition area. Had a bit of an issue racking my bike as the saddle of my bike was too high for the rack! 5 minutes later sorted using handlebars to prop up - meh! Got stuff out ready - helmet, number belt, gloves and sunglasses, towel for feet, trainers and socks and talc. Quick trip to the loo and then it was time to go and get to the pool! Allocated lane 3, got green swim cap to put on and after the first 3 sharing my lane were in, it was my turn. Late starting - 9.15am. Got in - goggles demisted, nose clip on and I was ready. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and GO! Followed my plan to do 4 or so lengths breastroke-freestyle-breastroke-freestyle until the adrenaline calmed down and my breathing levelled out. First length freestyling and found shallow end of pool too shallow to properly extend arm for good freestyle stroke! Eh!? Anyway, cracked on with the freestyle and didn't really breastroke again - it was too tiring! Lost count and asked how many I'd done - 10 - okay, only 6 to go! Cracked on again and was so happy to see the 2 to go board. Finished the swim and got out of the pool after having a major fight with my swimming hat! It did not want to come off and we had to take them off and leave them at the pool for the next user! Picked up Collingwood sweatshirt and crocs I'd worn before starting and off I went to transition! Over mat and chip started. I was a bit slow in transition - too much to do! Dried feet, talc-ed them, socks and trainers on. Top on over tri-suit (it was windy and chilly) and number belt on. Helmet on, glasses on, bike off rack and off I went at a wee jog with the bike. Mounting area, got on and sped off out of the complex. Oo-er, something's missing! Drink - check, number - check, bike gloves - oops! Naked hands! :-) The cycle was no faff at all - absolutely adored it. Thought I'd done
about 10k and then a 15k marker appeared. Wow - felt strong, comfy and
happy. Tri suit was great and the only challenge with the bike was taking
the drinks bottle out of the holder and grabbing a drink without being
blown off the bike! It was very windy indeed! Bike racked up, hat off, top off, number turned round and out for a fairly
flat but very rutted 5k cross-country. Dom ran to meet me and encouraged me in - I couldn't even say hello to him! I just smiled and looked a bit knackered! Rich shouted me in and I finished over the chip mat. Enjoyed the experience very much and am now looking at one for June and another for July!"

Results We all had OS maps with the route on plus a fairly detailed route narrative and the route had been marked and then remarked and then remarked again! However the locals don’t like people running/walking or cycling through their woods and as a result many of the signs had been taken down (repeadedly!). This of course led to some frustration throughout the next two days! Fortunately I teamed up with someone of a similar pace who had good glasses and I reciprocated by having good distance vision, between us we managed to stay on track! Apart from early on the first day when we needed some help from a passing stranger with a Garmin Oregon, we managed just fine and didn’t add any extra miles to our already long day! The first day was 30 miles and so we really did not want to add anything to that! The checkpoints were at odd distances owing to the trail through the woods but were very welcome when we got to them. The New Forest is really quite hilly in parts and my strategy had always been to walk up the hills and run down them so that’s what we did. This meant that as the day went on we were able to catch up with some of the others who had started well but taken detours at some point or other. One person who found themselves on the wrong side of the river decided to swim across! Rather foolhardy but fortunately he made it to the other side, but not something I would recommend! My favourite quote of the day was from another runner who appeared from completely the wrong direction complaining about the lack of signs! Perhaps he thought there should be signs saying “this is not the right way!” Finally we all met up at the sports hall that was to be our accommodation for that night and where Nicky had bagsied us a corner. Sleeping bags were set out and showers had, I booked myself a massage (along with 20 others!) and we got ourselves organised. The school chef had agreed to cook and we had a fantastic dinner of chicken or salmon and jacket or roast spuds! Once we had eaten it was a case of a glass of wine for me and a trip to the pub for Dave (with his new BF) sadly my wine did not help me sleep although I can’t speak for Dave’s beer! Breakfast was full English and porridge! YUMM! And we all set off again at 8.00! we started with a stiff uphill (great!) before travelling over an exposed moorland into a strongish headwind. The first couple of turns were difficult as signs had been taken down again! But once we got going it was fine although hilly again! Dave had a slightly more difficult day having decided to run with a group of kind American ladies who promptly got him lost! Some hours later he caught up with his running mates of the previous day have had a substantial detour! As before the checkpoints were at a variety of distances and at one there was a very cute pony who was determined to eat the cake before the runners could! However nothing was going to get between me and the famous XNRG homemade rocky road! And having refuelled we were off again, day 2 was a different although still challenging route comprising nearly all off road trails and paths and was only 29 miles! Nicky was at the finish and was a very welcome sight as I crossed the finish line somehow still smiling! But with rather sore feet! Injuries were low! For me one blister on my foot and a bruise on my arm where I pinched my arm in a gate! We had a chance to shower and change into our new XNRG tee-shirts before
heading back! We had a hot and busy weekend but a fantastic time. The
scenery was fantastic, the company amazing and an experience definitely
to be repeated! Question is which one! And who can I persuade to keep
me company? Any offers?"

harder. I finished in 4 hours 56." |

Mon 25 Apr 2011Stockley Park 10k |
Josh reports: "Lorraine, Cat and I travelled to Uxbridge on Easter Monday for the Stockley Park 10k. This is an off-road race organised by Purple Patch Running mainly on trails and footpaths of Stockley Park golf course. We arrived about an hour before the start, registered and took in the idyllic surrounding area. The start/finish line was just opposite a lake with eight synchronized swimmers legs. Weather was lovely - sunny and hot, music was playing - a good morning for a 10k. Before long we were off - 1st k was on road through a business park and then we were onto the trail paths of the golf course. The route was described as undulating - this was not an understatement, we all are agreed the ups far outnumbered the downs with the biggest at 7k. Underfoot conditions were tough - so I was always looking forward, planning out the smoothest route. Before long I was at the water station at halfway - cooled my legs, neck, rinsed my mouth - went to drink the remainder, tripped and dropped the water - DOH! - must be more careful in future. Rest of the race I tried to maintain a good steady pace knowing I was on target for a SB. I distracted myself with the views of the golf course and lake. 9k marker - excellent 1k to go and back on roads. Cat cheering me on with 100m to go - saw the synchronized swimmers and nearly added a ninth leg. Across the finish line in just over 55mins. Picked up a nice medal and a goody bag containing: Purell hygienic hand rub, Ecover fabric softener, body shop moisturiser and a four minute shower challenge timer. (Later found out the bags were left-overs from a recent water aid sponsored race). Watched the presentations and then headed to the pub overlooking the
lake for brunch. I wanted a healthy salad but had my arm twisted to join
the ladies for a full English. Lorraine and I struggled to finish ours,
however Cat licked the plate clean - uttering something about post marathon
hunger..."

Mel reports: "........Compton 40 miles the next day was also very
hot, It was a lovely course although quite hard. I was running through
the woodlands in the last mile thinking how pretty the bluebells were
whan I tripped and went headfirst into them, Luckily no one saw me, I
picked myself up, and carried on running through the woodlands down the

Well done to Annette on a PB by 12s in what would have been a W50 course

Sun 3 Apr 2011Harewood Forest 7.5k XC |
Josh reports: "On Sunday 3rd April, I ran the 5th Harewood Forest XC in Wherwell, Hampshire. It is a local event, with the option of running either 7.5k or 11k. It was a challenging off-road course with some testing hills - A kennel of bloodhounds gave me a surprise around the 2k marker, and we ran past an impressive looking paintball arena 5 mins later. At around 5k the course split with the 11k runners heading up another hill - I however turn off and headed for the finish enjoying a very refreshing (and much needed) downhill finish. Most opted for the longer 11k which enabled me to finish 3rd overall and 2nd male back - just beating the first 11k runner by 30 secs!! The organisers keep the website and event low key so don't publish results
- my Garmin clocked me at 41.35"
