Sun 30 Oct Ronhill Surrey Classic 10k Nonsuch Pk			Road Results Index   Photos   Results A little below par for Dan, and it didn't help missing the finish funnel. It's the funnel-shaped thing with tape and stuff Dan. Steve pipped Martin in the last 400m despite still feeling a few aches from last week's Founders Marathon. Paul was very happy with his time, as was John after a 2 month lay-off.

Saw Tony G & family there...seems like that was his last race in Collingwood colours :-( Finished 1 place (gun time) behind the rower, James Cracknell, who passed me at 10 miles & whom I had a chat with at the end. Fairly happy with time considering lack of long runs recently."

Sun 18 Sep Great North Run			Road Results Index   Full Results Paul reports: "Bad news this year with the 4 deaths - it put a downer on the day. The start was the busiest we have seen. We were crammed in like sardines. I had a collision and very nearly went down on the bridge. Run was going very well up to 7 miles and I was on target for under 1:30, then my left calf tore again. A couple of minutes later I managed to spot Bob in the masses as he passed me. It was a matter of limp and jog, but by 11 miles I was having trouble walking. Anyway, eventually finished. What I did notice was a lot of people receiving first aid. It seemed too crowded for the aid to arrive quickly. Then on Monday Bob's timetable reading skills had us on the wrong side of Newcastle station as our train arrived on the opposite side. It's amazing how fast you can go in pain when you have to (cheers mate). Highlight of the weekend - the cowgirls dancing on the bar."

Sun 11 Sep Nottingham Marathon			Road Results Index   Full Results Bob reports: "A nice overcast day ideal for running. When I'd fought my way through the crowds I settled into a nice rhythm and thoughts of a 3 15 were in my mind. At about 15 miles everything on my right side started to creak and ache. At 20 miles it was definitely time to walk, which happened to be the most boring part of the run. A run/walk system carried me to the finish. PS. I did go to pub after a long drive back."

Sun 11 Sep Hardy's Hike 16 Mile Multi-Terrain			Road Results Index Paul Reed's non-race report: "I was going to go for a long training run today but saw this online and went along. Start time online was 11am, but when I arrived at 10am everyone else was setting off. So I missed the briefing (turned out to be important). I eventually set off and after a couple of miles met up with some other runners. I started talking to them and immediately took the wrong turn. Then at the 5 mile point the route splits left for the run and right for the 24 mile hike (this was pointed out at the briefing). So, I thought I'd go right and run around Corf Castle - very nice but in the opposite direction. Anyway, I just took it easy and enjoyed the views, something I don't usually do, and it is very scenic. The finish takes you along Swanage promenade, which was full, and I mean full of what looked like mad morris dancers intent on shaking a ******* pole at me. I did over 17 miles in the end and it took 2hrs 49 min but I did enjoy a run with no pressure on the time. Cheers PS not off to the pub as I bought some Guinness on the way back."

Sun 4 Sep The Beast Multi-Terrain			Road Results Index Paul reports on his "favourite" race: "Well I said I wouldn't do it again. It is supposed to be 13/14 but I had the gps and it came out at 12.1mls. It is very tough and the terrain is rough and rugged, it was hot with a bit of a breeze. Last year I started at the back and felt that I got held up so this year I started at the front. Went off too quick and then felt like the whole field was passing me for the first 5 mls or so. Anyway, got into a race with a guy for the last mile who pipped me at the line. Took over 5 mins off last year so not too bad. And yes, I am going to the pub. PS Not doing it again."

Sun 28 Aug Arundel 10k			Road Results Index   Full Results Set in the grounds of the castle, with a nice 4.5km incline to start with. I started off well until disaster struck at around 7km - I decided to do a swan dive with a pike half twist. Getting up from embarrassment more than anything else I ran another 100m to fall again. Time for a walk and to review my pre-race drink strategy of 4 pints.

Sun 14 Aug Wimbledon 5k			Road Results Index   Full Results Our 5k specialist Tony had a strong first K and couldn't be caught despite his assertion that he was virtually walking up the hill on the second lap. Well done to Andrew in his first race for the club. Tom made a suicidal start up the hill and suffered for it later, unable to catch Chris at the finish. Things are tight after this penultimate race in the club championship, with Martin leading Terry by 1pt, and Steve 3pts behind him. It'll all be down to a September marathon, if any of these choose to run one.

Tony reports: " Three club members ran this weekly 2 miles at Battersea Park which I first started running way back in 1988! Dan Gillett nipped around in a very impressive 10m 31s to finish an excellent 4th place and was, understandably, quite chuffed with this time. Thomas Wilkie ran 14m 19s which was a bit down on last week's effort. He, philosophically, promoted the viewpoint that if only he had a bet of two pints he would have caught that nice girl in front of him. I managed 12m 41s which I won't write home about :)"

Sun 24 Jul Elmbridge 10k			Road Results Index   Full Results Everyone usually moans that they can't do a fast time at Elmbridge because it's always so hot. Not so this time though, as it was cooler and rainy. Star of the day was Steve, who had intended just going under 45 minutes for the first time, but ended up beating his pb by about 4 mins. Tom had one of his quicker runs, and Steph continued on her comeback trail, going under the hour this time.

We ran a lap and a bit round the outer road in the park. I was quite pleased with my time - gives me something to build on. It also shows Tom can race when he wants to. As for Colin, there were too many other interesting sights of the female kind to take his mind off running. It's an excuse."

Sun 10 Jul High Wycombe Half			Road Results Index It didn’t rain at High Wycombe for the half – in fact, though it was 26 degrees at the start it was (so I was told) 31 degrees and climbing when I finally came in, in 2 hours 21 minutes 55 seconds (?) later. I guess I can be happy with that – there were plenty left to finish as I watched from the clubhouse. Thanks are particularly due to all the kind-spirited local people who appeared from behind their hedges to hose us down every half mile or so.

Thur 7 Jul Nonsuch Park Relay			Road Results Index   Full Results Some rain made the tarmac slightly slippery in places, and the dirt track at the back of the course treacherous, especially for the later runners. Welcome and well done to Juliet who was running not only her first race for Collingwood, but also her first race ever. 50 teams finished, which was down on the numbers in recent years as some people were unable to get to the race after the horrific events in London, and some chose not to run.

Sun 3 Jul Portland 10			Road Results Index   Photo Well I did it again after swearing not to last year. I haven't run much since Edinburgh where I strained my foot tendons. And I did suffer. Then at 5 miles my left calf started to hurt. This is the one I tore early this year so I backed off a bit. This is a tough ten with plenty of hills in it. The weather was ok, not too hot. I can't remember a run where I felt so bad the whole way round - never again! The good news is I got a spot prize - some running socks and an animal watch strap. Apparently it was for the largest lunchbox in lycra. And tell the old fart I ran in my Collingwood top. Time 3.5 mins down on last year.

Sun 12 June Edinburgh Marathon			Road Results Index  Full Results PBs for both Paul and Mel, with Mel being comfortably inside the 4 hour mark she's being aiming for in the last couple of outings. There were also quick runs for Tom and Rob, but Keith seemed to suffer. Paul reports: "A good weekend for everyone.Thanks to Tom for arranging the flights. (Cheers, I think we all loved getting up at 4am). Mel got stopped and searched on the way out, much to our amusement. Weather was raining to start but stopped shortly after. We all had good runs. I haven't got official times yet (posted now) but Mel and myself did PBs or PRs as an American at the run says, (Personal Records Man). Mel and Robbie eventually left for the airport on Sunday afternoon. Robbie just didn't want to leave the pub!"

Sun 5 June Dorking 10			Road Results Index  Full Results Terry was first home for the club, despite having to stop after a couple of miles and re-tie his laces (that's your cheap Go-faster shoes for you). He had been in front of Bob and Martin at the time, and worked his way back to pass them both again as Martin was closing Bob down. Martin managed to catch Terry with about 3 miles to go, but didn't have enough to go past and hoped for a sprint finish to despatch him. He had other ideas though, and put his foot down at the 9 mile marker, finishing about 9s ahead of Martin. Steve had a great run in his first 10 miler, finishing not too far behind Martin and much quicker than the 80 mins he was anticipating. Well done to Mel who broke her pb from last year by about 4 mins despite a sore back. Also well done to Susanne in her first race for the club. She was anticipating a 2hr time, but finished strongly in 1:53:58. Oh, and Rob won the M70 prize again of course. Positions shown are m/f and overall in brackets. The men's team was 28th of 46. ps. Sun 15 May Ranelagh Richmond Half			Road Results Index Tom reports: "The weather was very hot. A new 1 lap course finishing at the same finish as the Dysart Dash. The course started by the traffic lights near the pub, then through Richmond. The new course took in part of the Kingston marathon course (over Kingston Bridge), down the towpath opposite Ravens Ait, to Hampton Court, back up the towpath to Kingston, then down the road with hundreds of sleeping policeman, to the finish in the same park as Dysart Dash finish. Then the long walk back to the pub. It was baking hot, and the pub was closed. Fancy that all those runners and the pub was closed. No good to Paul Reed then. I might have bought a round!!! They might as well have called it the Dysart Half Marathon."

I met Robbie just as we started, who then proceeded to moan about club runners not wearing club vests (me), so a tactical decision was made, off I went. The course was mainly country roads and was hard going as there was little shelter from the sun."

Sun 8 May Esher Church School 10k			Road Results Index Bob reports: "Not as hot as last weekend. Nice course taking you through Arbrook Woods and surrounding trails. I met Martin G, who informed me that with his go-faster training was sure to break 1hr. He had to, he had tickets for West Ham. I was reasonably pleased with 45 22 after last week's Three Forts Marathon." Martin reports: "Delighted to tell you I got a (second life incarnation) PB at 10k this morning at the Esher School 10k (which a Collingwood guy called Bob also did) of 57:21 – four minutes better than the Sutton 10k last week. Didn’t go off quite so fast this time - and it wasn’t as warm. Even better – then went to Watford to see West Ham beat the Hornets 2-1 to get into the play-offs."

Thur 5 May Dave Clarke c5k			Road Results Index   Full Results Dan was 7 seconds outside last year's pb, whilst Keith was pleased with his time after disappointment at last Sunday's Sutton 10k. Terry managed to keep in front of Steve for most of the race, but when Steve drew level and Terry gave him encouragement to push on, he needed no further invitation. Chris was reportedly not impressed with Tom's late charge to pip him at the post.

Sun 1 May Sutton 10k			Road Results Index   Full Results   Photos A warm day for the first of the Surrey Road League races, around Beddington Park. Keith was a little down on his usual sort of time, having sacrificed training of late in favour of decorating. Well done to Steve on his first race for the club. He was hoping for sub 45, but with the improvement he's made in recent weeks, it's surely only a matter of time. It was good to see Martin G continuing on his comeback trail and gradually working his times back down again. Collingwood was 19th of 25 in the Surrey Road League.

I'd also forgotten quite how undulating the course is, but have absolutely no complaints as it was a lovely sunny morning and I managed to carve a massive 46 seconds off my 3 year old pb, finishing in 35'00'' (unoff). I think I was 8th. Big Chris, Tony G, Bob the fireman and Dave Q were also there."

Fri 25 Mar Folkestone 10			Road Results Index Dan reports: "My 4th time in 5 years for this race; a flat course along the seafront, usually from Folkestone to Hythe and back, but this year starting at Hythe. Often a strong sea breeze slows you down a bit, but this time conditions were perfect; no wind at all, and a sea mist keeping the temperature about right. I was aiming to go sub-60 and covered the first half in under 29 minutes at 5:45 pace. I was feeling in superb shape, and to my pleasant surprise maintained this pace heading back. Working my way up the field, I managed 5:30 for the last mile, to finish 13th in 57:26 - a pb by over 1.5 minutes. This is the best I've ever raced ;-) 543 finished, including the first woman, Charlotte Dale who came 4th in approx 53 minutes!"

Sun 20 Mar Kingston 16			Road Results Index   Full Results Dan reports: "The most difficult thing about this race was trying not to get too worked up about the deluge of inane pre-race e-mails from the race director, telling participants how to pin their numbers on, to pack their kitbags the night before, to bring 3 pound coins for the carpark etc. On arriving, further annoyance was provided by the stupid announcer spouting forth all kinds of nonsense. The course , of course, is pleasant, and the weather was perfect. I'd set off aiming to do marathon trial pace 6:30 min miles, but ended up running comfortably at 6:15s & finishing with a 5:45 as the finish beckoned and the energy gel downed at 8 miles kicked in. Position was 27th / 1,282 in the men's race, with a time of 1-39-53, which I am really pleased with, though I've done something to my knee. Better still, I managed a PB....16 miles without stopping for a wee! At the finish there was no medal etc, or even a readily accessible water stand, but instead a stall selling tee shirts. At £15 entry I don't know how this race attracts so many people with the emphasis seemingly geared to making money."

This race also saw the welcome return to racing of Martin Godleman, although not quite back to his form of old.

Sat 12 Mar East Surrey League - Fixture 3 Box Hill Relay			Road Results Index The third fixture of this season's East Surrey League, at the foot of Box Hill near Dorking. For those not familiar with the course, it takes in just a few "undulations" at the bottom of the hill rather than Box Hill itself. We don't seem to have taken part in this one for a few years as the team priority is usually with the Hastings Half on the following day. Just the one complete team, and Tony had quickest Collingwood time on the day. Well done to Marie for volunteering to make a team on her own, and bothering to run not just one but 2 laps (didn't get a time for the second one) when she could have taken the easy option and not bothered running at all.

Sun 20 Feb Sussex Beacon Half			Road Results Index   Full Results A half marathon at Brighton with a flat first 8 or 9 miles, and then goes up the cliffs at Rottingdean and back down again. Dan reports: "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside......... Weather - Sunny, cold, windy. Unoff Time - 1.19.05 (sub - 60 min 10 miles, but then a strong headwind in the final 3 miles) Verdict - Very happy! But - Didn't see Mel, who was also supposed to be doing it." The Brighton Argus has first dibs on the published results as one of the sponsors, so they're not scheduled to appear on the web until Tue 1 Mar, but fortunately Dan seems to have bought a paper, so see left for official results.

Sun 23 Jan The 2000 Perch			Road Results Index About 6.25 miles multi-terrain at Epsom Downs. Chris Brooke reports: "Only 3 members took part. Paul Reed finished strongly in 42nd place. Paul Brooke was pleased with his run despite taking a tumble on a tricky turn in the last mile. Only pride hurt fortunately. John Allen was very pleased with his time, he expected to run a couple of minutes slower."

Sun 9 Jan Winter Tanners			Road Results Index An off-road, orienteering type event in Surrey, organised by The Long Distance Walkers Association. It should have been around 30 miles, but with the usual deviations from the route, some of them may have done an extra mile or two, or even taken a short-cut. It sounds like there was the usual fun and games on a very windy and muddy course with much falling over and general hilarity.

Sun 9 Jan Milborne St Andrew 10			Road Results Index Paul reports: "I decided not to do The Tanners 30 with the club as I had been ill all week (no Wilkie it's not an excuse). So I did this one. I did it last year but was getting over an injury. The time flew by, probably because I had a new toy - my GPS watch. It's great, does everything except buy you a beer. I ran OK but felt tired. My son Max (11) ran the 2 mile multi-terrain - posn 11th, 14:46. I was very pleased for him. I am now loading the data from my watch to the PC so I can blah blah blah blah. I will bore you all next time I'm down."

Sun 2 Jan Tadworth 10			Road Results Index Chris Brooke reports: "The race is a hard as I remember it, one of the reasons I've only run it once before. The course is multi-terrain and quite interesting, but the hills are a tad severe. It was cold and very windy. I think Michelle did extremely well to finish in the time she did as she starts her London Marathon training." Also, congrats to David Johnson in his first race for the club, putting some of the regulars to shame.
